In the late 80’s and early 90’s, supermodel Christy Turlington achieved International fame along with her contemporaries Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell. Since retiring from her fulltime modeling career Turlington has established herself as both a writer and businesswoman.  In 2002 Turlington published Living Yoga: Creating a Life Practice to share her physical, emotional and spiritual journey of yoga practices.

“Yoga is so universal in its principles and so holistically beneficial,” states Turlington, “it is possible for any person, young or old, religious or agnostic, to embrace and enjoy a practice.”

Studies have shown that the practice of various forms of yoga can provide a myriad of health benefits, both emotional and physical.  Whether you suffer from chronic back and neck pain, muscle tightness, mental stress, weight gain or other issues yoga may be the answer for you.

Modern Yoga: The Perfect Compliment to Massage, Chiropractic and Physical Therapy

Yoga has a history spanning over 4,000 years and in the last century yoga has been integrated into American culture, lifestyles and alternative healthcare practices. Massage therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists and alternative healthcare practitioners of all kinds see the value of regular yoga practices as an excellent compliment to other alternative treatments.  Yoga promotes and supports health throughout the body and mind. Even Western medicine acknowledges the advantages yoga offers to patients dealing with physical therapy, rehabilitation or chronic illness.

In the last 20 years books and yoga videos have been produced describing everything from the practice of yoga and different traditions to personal healing experiences.  In addition to books like Christy Turlington’s Living Yoga, there are books written for yoga therapists like Instructing Hatha Yoga by authors Kathy Lee Kappmeier and Diane M. Ambrosin.  Instructing Hatha Yoga outlines the qualities necessary in order to be an effective yoga teacher. Basic yoga videos such as Yoga: Mind, Body & Spirit provide information on yoga practices, philosophy and history. Thai Yoga Massage for Couples is a specialty yoga video that incorporates Thai massage and yoga practices to increase physical comfort and intimacy.

How to Get Started…Choosing the Right Yoga Mat and Exercise Ball

Yoga has also become a popular form of exercise in the United States and is now taught in gyms and athletic programs.  Two commonly used pieces of yoga exercise equipment are the yoga mat (link to page ) and the exercise ball.  Exercise balls (link to page ) come in all sizes and colors and can be used for other types of exercise including Pilates. Choose an exercise ball to suit your individual needs and goals. The perfect yoga mat must have a durable, non-slip surface and a comfortable thickness.  A yoga mat like the Airex Corona Mat even resists ripping, will not pick up dust or dirt and can be used in hydrotherapy. Natural fiber cotton yoga mats and yoga rugs are also available.
